Mr. Aaron Custer

The intent of the next few paragraphs is to explain to you my educational philosophy. There are many different views of education which lead to many different educational philosophies and many different teaching styles. The following statements are my views of education.

The purpose of education is to create lifetime learners who are critical thinkers and problem solvers, not just to be able to turn in some assignments and pass a few tests, but to be able to enrich lives and create free thinkers. This is an incredible task and an even greater accomplishment. This process does not happen over night or even in one year for that matter. It is an ongoing corporative effort between the school team, the learner, parents, and anyone that encourages things such as self improvement, skill learning, or pursuit of an interest that requires reading or thinking.

In the process of education the learner must first and foremost be present.  Attendance is something that I realize the importance of and feel that many of the problems with learning has to do with students getting behind from an absence.  Many times these students have a really hard time catching back up and after a few tries, realize that it’s made the lessons even harder.  The second thing I find of utmost importance is for the student to be prepared to participate with an open and eager mind.  Children are naturally curious and easily stimulated.  We must take advantage of this curiosity.  In a teacher guided, safe environment, the learner should be encouraged to explore, think, act, and create with positive reinforcement.

I feel that discovery, cooperative learning, modern technology, and hands on activities maximize learning opportunities.  Learning is an effort that requires many different tools to keep the learner engaged and constantly thinking and learning.  We are all very diverse individuals who have our own experiences, ideas, and learning styles.

I believe it is the roll of the parent to be actively engaged in the learner’s education thus supporting the educators in their endeavor.  There is not one right or wrong definition of support, it is simply active participation.  Active participation can be defined as sending supplies to the classroom, volunteering of time to the classroom, or joining a parent – teacher organization.  These are certainly not the only definitions of support but are just a few ideas.  I believe the real success of the learner comes from a well rounded variety of involvement from the learners to the educators to the parents to the community.  Leaving out any of these critical pieces of the equation would short - change this attempt.

Education is something that we will receive no matter our future.  We will constantly be exposed to people that will educate us in our lives be it in the school, workplace, home, or at social functions.  Teaching in a fun, positive atmosphere will create good habits and attitude toward learning that will prepare the learner for a lifetime of learning and hopefully an enhanced life because of this learning.
